A vehicle collision can be a chaotic and confusing experience. However, the steps you take immediately after an accident can significantly impact your physical health and your ability to receive compensation through an insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit. What should you do after a crash?

Put your health first

Before doing anything else, check yourself and others involved for injuries. If there are any signs of injury, call an ambulance or seek medical attention as soon as possible. Shock and adrenaline can often mask pain, and you might not be aware of how serious your injuries are. It is crucial to be assessed by medical professionals after a car accident.

Move to a safe place

If the collision was minor and it’s safe to do so, move vehicles out of traffic to avoid further damage and reduce the risk of additional accidents. When your car is in a safe location, turn on your hazard lights.

Call the authorities

Especially if the collision resulted in injuries or property damage, call the police to report the accident. A police report officially documents the event and provides an impartial assessment which is crucial for insurance claims and legal purposes.

Exchange information

While waiting for the police, exchange contact and insurance information with anyone else involved in the accident. Be sure to get their names, phone numbers, addresses, drivers’ license numbers, license plate numbers and basic insurance information. If there are witnesses, get their contact information as well, as their statements could be crucial in resolving disputes about the accident.

Document everything

While the police will document the scene, you should also keep your own records. Take detailed photos of the vehicles involved, any visible damage, the surrounding area and any injuries sustained. Also, if you can, write down or record your version of what happened while it’s fresh in your memory. This information organized can be useful when filing your insurance claim.

Report the incident to your insurance company

Contact your insurance provider to report the accident as soon as you can. Give them the information that you gathered at the scene, but take care to not admit fault or apologize when speaking to the insurance company’s representatives.

Call an attorney

Getting treatment for injuries, dealing with the insurance company or taking other steps after a crash can be stressful. A car accident attorney can help lift some of this burden and help you understand all of your options for compensation.

A crash can be stressful, but the actions you take in the aftermath of a collision can make all the difference. By taking the right steps after a crash, you can protect your physical, emotional and financial wellbeing.
