How should you respond to an aggressive driver?

On Behalf of | Mar 6, 2024 | Car Accidents

Unfortunately, driving can bring out the worst in some people. In fact, some studies suggest that aggressive driving is a factor in around half of all fatal road traffic collisions

It’s not easy knowing how to react to an aggressive driver who endangers your safety. Hopefully, the following tips could help protect you

Avoid confrontation

Your initial reaction may be to confront someone who has acted aggressively toward you, but this will not end well on the roads. The priority is getting you away from the situation safely, and one of the best ways to do this is to avoid confrontation as much as possible.

If it’s safe to do so, let the driver pass without giving them any type of reaction. Sometimes, aggressive drivers are looking for someone to respond to them so that they can engage in even worse behavior.

Pull over in a safe place

If the aggressive driver is refusing to leave you alone, then it may be safer to pull over than stay out on the road. However, you must pick a safe place to stop. You shouldn’t pull over in isolated areas or any area where there is high-speed traffic. Instead, select a public space nearby where there will be cameras, witnesses and perhaps police officers. (One thing that you definitely shouldn’t do is drive home and allow the aggressive driver to follow you there.)

Calling the authorities as soon as you can pull over should help to protect you. If you have been injured by an aggressive driver, then you can hold them to account legally. Seek further guidance to find out more about personal injury claims.
